Eons ago, the Astral plane was the original home of the ganas where they were tasked with collecting memories from the deceased as the dead arrived to be judged and then sent on to their eternal fate. Once collected, the memories were categorized and recorded in the Akashic record. As spectators rather than participants, many ganas began to long to live a life filled with excitement and adventure like the memories they recorded. Dissatisfied with the neverchanging landscape of swirling silver mists, a group of ganas abandoned their duties and traveled to the Material plane to live a life of participation where the landscape is ever-changing and adventure is forever unfolding. Having found what they were yearning for at the end of their pilgrimage, the ganas settled on the Material plane and made it their permanent home. There are still a small number of ganas collecting Akashic records on the Astral plane, but the Material plane is now home to the majority of the gana population.

Physical Description

Ganas are nearly identical to humans with a few notable exceptions. Most obvious is the crown of thick, brightly colored, hard scales that cover their forehead, cheekbones, skull, abdomen, and the front of their upper thighs, acting as a formidable barrier against injury. Almost as striking are a gana’s pupils. Instead of being round, they are thin, vertical, slits centered in an iris that matches the color of the gana’s scales. It is probably the similarity of their eyes to that of dragons and snakes that can make a gana appear menacing. Couple that with the ability to raise their facial and cranial scales like a frilled lizard and squirt blood from their eyes and you have a gana that can be terrifying to look upon. Ganas of both sexes are hairless and taller than most humans, reaching heights from 6 to 7 feet with athletic builds.


Upon arriving from the Astral plane long ago, the first ganas were delighted to slip into busy urban societies where racial variety was the norm. Places that supported busy seaports or large centers of learning provided a springboard for the ganas to begin creating their own fantastical life stories. From there, the gana race spread across the globe. Ganas can be found in any setting, with a predilection for urban areas over desolate ones, as a desolate vista reminds them too much of the unchanging silver mists told of in the stories of their ancestors. Regardless of where a gana settles, you can be sure they are at the center of the action. With 500 years of life to look forward to, ganas have plenty of time to rise to a powerful station in their chosen fields. They frequently involve themselves in politics or choose positions of note in the community, such as tribal shaman, solicitor, or shop owner. Besides standing out as notable societal figures, ganas like to stand out visually. Though they accomplish this in drastically different ways. Ganas involved in high society bedeck themselves in jewels and expensive, colorful clothing while ganas engaging in battle have adopted the macabre custom of attaching trophies from their kills to their ensemble, projecting a gruesome and daunting persona.

Alignment and Religion

Originally, as keepers of the Akashic records, ganas were a race dedicated to duty and precision attending to their tasks without judgment. The ganas still residing on the Astral plane reflect this tendency towards a LN alignment. The ganas that emigrated to the Material plane were more adventuresome and desired freedom to choose, explore, and create for themselves. Ganas of the Material plane reflect a more varied outlook regarding law and order ranging from the military-minded to the freedom fighters and everything in between. With ancestors that personally witnessed the journey of souls to various destinations in the afterlife, ganas are well aware of powerful higher beings and virtually all ganas revere a deity, with very few choosing the path of evil as they have no desire to spend eternity in the terrifying realms of those gods.


Ganas appreciate freethinkers, risk-takers, and perfectionism. They dislike expansionist races that conquer other nations and obliterate the nation’s customs and enslave its people.


While ganas don’t understand dwarven complacency with remaining tucked away in the mountains with clan folk, they can certainly appreciate dwarven craftsmanship. When selecting armor, ganas settle for nothing less than the superior quality of dwarven made.


Ganas can easily empathize with elven love of self-expression and appreciation of art, poetry, and beauty. Ganas also respect the stately way elves carry themselves.


Brave, curious, adventurous, and opportunistic- gana view all of these as excellent qualities to have in a traveling companion.


The only generalization ganas can make about humans is that there is no “typical” human. human nature is as varied as snowflakes and ganas like to take their time to get to know a human as an individual before forming an opinion. Adventurers

Adventuring is a common pursuit among ganas. With a lifespan of 500 years, ganas often spend their early adult years traveling far and wide, building up a store of coin so that when they find a community that appeals to them, they have the means to rise to the top of whatever endeavor they undertake as a long term goal. Ganas’ natural psionic ability makes them excellent candidates for practitioners of the occult arts and the rich oral history passed down from their ancestors as keepers of stories gives them plenty of material to draw upon if they choose the life of a bard. A gana’s penchant for perfection makes them ideal fighters and monks as well. Ganas like to be in control at all times, so few choose the path of barbarian or bloodrager.

Misc. Racial Traits

  • Astral Ancestry (1 RP) Knowledge (planes) and Knowledge (arcana [*or psionics if using Dreamscarred Press’s psionic rules]) are always considered class skills for a gana.
  • Strong-Minded (1 RP) Ganas exercise the power of their minds daily making it difficult to manipulate them against their will. They gain a +2 racial bonus on all Will saving throws.
  • Psychic Nature (1 RP) Ganas with an Intelligence score of 11 or higher gain the following spell-like abilities*: 1/day— comprehend languages, detect magic, mage hand, message. The caster level for these effects is equal to the user’s character level. *If you are using the psionic rules from Dreamscarred Press, consider these psi-like abilities rather than spell-like abilities, and substitute the following psionic power and talents from Psionics Unleashed instead: empty mind, far hand, float, and missive.
  • Cosmopolitan* (2 RP) Ganas prefer to be at the center of the action experiencing all life has to offer among the plethora of diverse cultures. They gain the bonus feat Cosmopolitan. *If you are using the psionic rules from Dreamscarred Press, exchange this feature for Naturally Psionic (2 RP): A gana’s mind is psionically awakened. They gain the Wild Talent feat as a bonus feat, or if a gana takes any levels in a psionic class, they gain the Psionic Talent feat instead.
  • Unsettling Countenance (2 RP) Once per hour as a standard action, a gana can cause blood to ooze from its eyes and flare its facial and cranial scales as an extraordinary ability. One enemy of the gana’s choice within 5 feet of the gana must make a successful Will saving throw DC 10 + 1/2 the gana’s level + the gana’s Charisma modifier (if positive) or become shaken for 1d4 rounds. A target that successfully saves cannot be affected by the gana’s unsettling countenance for 24 hours. Creatures that are already shaken do not become frightened from this effect. Additionally, any Intimidate skill check a gana makes against a creature that is shaken from this effect gains a +2 circumstance bonus. This is a visual, mind-affecting effect that does not rely on a common language. It has no effect on blinded, sightless, or mindless creatures.

Alternate Racial Traits

The following racial traits may be selected instead of existing gana racial traits.

  • Astral Shroud (2 RP) Once per day as a supernatural ability, a gana can create a cloak of silvery mist around themself. Treat this as the blur spell. The caster level of the spell is equal to the gana’s character level. This racial trait replaces unsettling countenance.
  • Imposing (2 RP) Some ganas take advantage of their atypical countenance to elicit submission from their foes. They gain a +2 racial bonus on Intimidate skill checks. This racial trait replaces astral ancestry and psychic nature.
  • Long-Lived (0 RP) Benefitting from hundreds of years of life experiences, ganas with this trait are exceptionally wise and focus more on putting learning into action rather than simply cataloguing information. They gain +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, -2 Intelligence. This racial trait replaces +2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma.
  • Natural Leader (0 RP) Some ganas ooze self confidence, quickly taking the initiative in difficult social situations and counting on their force of personality and interpersonal skills to save the day rather than considering long-term implications. They gain +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, -2 Wisdom. This racial trait replaces +2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma.
  • Scintillating Scales (2 RP) Once per day as a standard action, a gana can cause their facial and cranial scales to shimmer in an enigmatic pattern which causes the target of this effect to gain the fascinated condition for 1 round plus one additional round for every 5 gana levels. One enemy of the gana’s choice within 5 feet of the gana must make a successful Will saving throw DC 10 + 1/2 the gana’s level + the gana’s Charisma modifier (if positive) to avoid this effect. This racial trait replaces unsettling countenance.
