You scribe a potent rune of power upon a surface.

  • Until it is triggered, the rune is inactive, but it is visible and legible at a distance of 60 feet unless you hide it in some way.
  • When at least one creature triggers the rune (see below), it charms one or more creatures within 60 feet (treat as a burst), as the charm monster spell, for 1 hour per caster level.
  • The rune affects the closest creatures first. Once triggered, the rune becomes active and glows, lasting for 10 minutes per caster level. A creature that enters the area while the rune is active is subject to its effect, whether or not that creature was in the area when it was triggered. A creature need save against the rune only once as long as it remains within the area, though if it leaves the area and returns while the rune is still active, it must save again.

Triggering the Rune: Choose one of the following triggers when you scribe the rune.

General Triggers—look at the rune; attempt to identify/read/recognize/study the rune; touch the rune (covering the rune counts); pass over the rune; or pass through a portal bearing the rune.

Specific Triggers—alignment, ancestry, background, class, heritage, homeland, name, or any other identifying features. Intangible qualities such as level, class, HD, and hit points don’t count.

You can’t use a symbol of persuasion offensively.

Bypassing the Rune: You can set specific circumstances that do not trigger the rune. You never trigger your own rune.

  • A password that must be spoken each time one enters the area.
  • An object that must be carried or worn.
  • Up to 2 specific creatures. This increases up to 10 creatures if you spend 1 hour casting the spell, plus 25 additional creatures for every 24 hours you spend casting the spell.

Countering the Rune: A symbol of persuasion can be removed by a successful dispel magic targeted solely on the rune. An erase spell has no effect on a symbol of persuasion. Destruction of the surface where a symbol of persuasion is inscribed destroys the rune but also triggers it.
