The subject believes he is surrounded by supernatural darkness. The target first gets a Will save to recognize that the darkness is unreal. The subject takes a –4 penalty on this save if he does not have low-light vision or darkvision and has not seen the sun within the last twenty-four hours. Subjects with low-light vision gain a +2 bonus on this save while those with darkvision gain a +4 bonus on this save. If the save fails, the darkness seems impenetrable, even to creatures with darkvision.

Because the creature believes the darkness to be real, he has no reason to communicate this fact to others and may be inclined to use his available resources to improve the prevailing lighting conditions. Allies notice the subject’s strange behavior and surmise the reason, such as fumbling around in the imaginary darkness, with a successful DC 20 Sense Motive check. If they communicate the darkness’s unreal nature to the subject, he may immediately attempt another Will save against the spell with a +4 bonus. If the subject casts a spell or effect that would normally counter or dispel darkness, the subject gains a new saving throw against this spell instead. Blind creatures as well as those relying upon other senses such as blindsight to discern their surroundings are immune to this spell.
