DESCRIPTION

Those who battle extraplanar foes sometimes seek a means to question them or simply discourage them from future incursions. This spell must be cast on an extraplanar creature of no more than 6 HD that is dying or died within the past round. Rather than allow its essence or soul to escape, you attempt to bind it into the object that serves as a focus. If successful, the target’s essence is bound to the object, and it cannot be returned to life until the essence is released, nor can it naturally recover damage to mental ability scores or Sanity. An object containing a bound essence gains auras appropriate to that creature. Destroying the focus will free the target’s essence.

A creature touching the object can communicate mentally with the essence as though they shared a common language. Benevolent casters use this opportunity to seek common ground, sometimes even hoping to convert slain outsiders so they may be reborn as servants of a plane more sympathetic to the caster’s philosophy. Malevolent casters interrogate or torment their defeated foes.

While bound to the focus object, a creature’s essence can still be targeted by mind-affecting abilities that are purely mental in nature (though they may have no meaningful effect), as well the following spells: agonize, atonement, castigate, interrogate. Casting agonize, castigate or interrogate (or other spells at the GM’s discretion) deals Charisma damage equal to the level of the spell, even if the target would normally be immune to ability score damage. If using the optional Sanity rules, these spells also deal 1 point of Sanity damage to the target for every die of damage they would normally inflict. If the creature is returned to life after its essence is freed, treat any Charisma or Sanity damage as negative levels when determining whether it is removed or retained.

The imprisoned essence can attempt a new saving throw each day to escape its imprisonment, though the DC is increased by 4. This spell can be cast again to extend the duration of the effect.

Summoned creatures, which are not truly present on the plane, are not affected by this spell.
