Jarl’s Axe

Aura moderate illusion; CL 10th; Slot —; Price 8,315 gp; Weight 6 lbs.

Description

The rulers of humanoid settlements plagued by frost giant and troll attacks bequeath this valuable +1 battleaxe to their descendants; thus, many of these weapons have been in the same families for centuries.

Weaponsmiths construct the weapon’s haft from orca or whalebone and the blade from steel. When the weapon hits a humanoid vulnerable to fire or a humanoid such as a troll with the regeneration extraordinary ability that cannot regenerate when it takes fire damage, the blade instantly ignites and momentarily glows bright orange. The battleaxe’s flames deal 2d6 points of fire damage to such humanoids on a successful hit in addition to the weapon’s normal damage. Furthermore, the creature struck believes it is on fire, causing it to spend a full-round action on its next turn attempting to douse the imaginary flames unless it succeeds on a DC 16 Will save to disbelieve the illusory effect. Multiple hits in the same round overlap, but do not stack. A creature who successfully disbelieves this illusion is immune to the illusion for 24 hours. This is a mind-affecting effect.
