Hartwolf

This animal looks completely normal, like any other deer or wolf, unless it takes on its hybrid form. Its deer frame then grows with the muscles and jaw of the wolf.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Change Shape (Su)

All lycanthropes have three forms. A hartwolf can assume wolf or hybrid form as a full-round action by making a DC 15 Constitution check, or deer form as a full-round action by making a DC 20 Constitution check. On nights when the full moon is visible, a hartwolf gains a +5 morale bonus to Constitution checks made to assume wolf or hybrid form, but a –5 penalty to Constitution checks made to assume deer form. A hartwolf reverts to its deer form automatically with the next sunrise, or after 8 hours of rest, whichever comes first. A slain hartwolf reverts to its deer form, although it remains dead.

Curse of Lycanthropy (Su)

A hartwolf’s bite attack in wolf or hybrid form infects a humanoid target with the lycanthropy curse (Fortitude DC 15 negates). If the victim’s size is not within one size category of the lycanthrope, this ability has no effect.

Lycanthropy

Type curse, injury; Save Fortitude DC 15 negates, Will DC 15 to avoid effects

Onset the next full moon; Frequency on the night of every full moon or whenever the target is injured.

Effect target transforms into a wolf under the GM’s control until the next morning

When a PC becomes a lycanthrope, you as the GM have a choice to make. In most cases, you should take control of the PC’s actions whenever he is in hybrid or animal form—lycanthropy shouldn’t be a method to increase a PC’s power, after all, and what an afflicted lycanthrope does while in animal or hybrid form is often at odds with what the character would actually want. If a player wants to play a lycanthrope, he should play a natural lycanthrope and follow the guidelines for playing a character of a powerful race.

ECOLOGY

Environment temperate forests
Organization solitary, pair, or herd (2-20)
Treasure none

In their deer form, hartwolves look like normal deer. Shy and wary, hartwolves range from the arctic to the tropics. They are very flexible creatures, adapting easily to their climate and able to survive in all but the harshest of temperatures. Unlike ordinary deer, a hartwolf herd is fiercely defensive. Any attack on a hartwolf, especially in deer form, is likely to be met with the full fury of these unusual lycanthropes.

Unlike humanoid lycanthropes, hartwolves have very little control over their transformation and transform more like afflicted lycanthropes.
