Ray Blaster

Some spellcasters prefer to use their power to strike with precision, using rays to focus on important targets rather than eliminating groups. Ray blasters are masters of the spellcaster’s weapon: the ray.

Class Features

The following are class features of the ray blaster.

Spells per Day

At the indicated levels, a ray blaster gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for additional spells per day, spells known (if he is a spontaneous spellcaster), and an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a ray blaster, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Ray Specialization (Ex)

A ray blaster gains the benefits of the point-blank shot and precise shot feats when attacking with rays (+1 bonus on attack and damage rolls up to 30 feet and don’t take the standard –4 penalty to attack rolls when firing into melee). In addition, a ray blaster counts his caster level as his fighter level for the purpose of qualifying for feats that affect rays, such as Weapon Specialization. If he has levels in fighter, these levels stack.

Arcane Blast

At 2nd level, a ray blaster gains arcane blast as a bonus feat, even if he does not meet the prerequisites.

Combat Casting

At 3rd level, a ray blaster gains combat casting as a bonus feat.

Ray Conversion (Su)

At 4th level, a ray blaster may, as a swift action, alter any spell he is casting that requires a ranged touch attack to be treated as a ray (for the purposes of feats, class abilities, etc.). This includes spells with a range of touch that have been altered with the Reach Spell metamagic feat.

Ray Mastery (Ex)

At 5th level, a ray blaster no longer provokes an attacks of opportunity when attacking with rays while threatened (though he must still cast defensively to avoid the attack of opportunity from casting the spell). Whenever he sacrifices a spell to create a ray attack using arcane blast, it deals an additional 1d6 damage. In addition, if the ray blaster would have his ray reflected back upon him, such as by attacking a creature with special protection against rays (such as a crystal dragon‘s ray reflection or a tarrasque‘s carapace ability), the ray is instead deflected harmlessly and will never reflect back upon the ray blaster.
