Noble Boar

The body of the noble boar is compact; the head is large, the legs relatively short. The fur consists of stiff bristles and usually finer fur. The colour usually varies from dark grey to black or brown, but there are great regional differences in colour; even whitish animals are known in some regions. During winter the fur is much denser. The Noble Boar is quite a variably sized mammal. In exceptionally large specimens, the species can rival the size of the Giant forest hog. Adult boars can measure from 35″ to 79″ in length, not counting a tail of 5.9″ to 16″, and have a shoulder height of 22″ to 43″. As a whole, their average weight is 110–200 pounds, though boars show a great deal of weight variation within their geographical ranges.

Adult males develop tusks, continuously growing teeth that protrude from the mouth, from their upper and lower canine teeth. These serve as weapons and tools. The upper tusks are bent upwards in males, and are regularly ground against the lower ones to produce sharp edges. The tusks normally measure about 2.4″, in exceptional cases even 4.7″. Females also have sharp canines, but they are smaller, and not protruding like the males’ tusks. Tigers hunt boars, but avoid tackling mature male boars. In many cases, boars have gored tigers to death in self-defense. Noble boars can be dangerous to humans, especially when they have piglets.

Species Descriptions

Noble Boars are among the most aggressive non-predatory species in the animal kingdom. Woe betides the creature — man or beast — who strays into the path of a mother noble boar protecting her young. And while they are non-predatory, that doesn’t mean they won’t eat meat; they simply prefer it to be dead before they get to it.

In noble wild society, the noble boar is often ignored, seeming to have little to contribute to a conversation, and few political leanings at all. This suits most noble boars just fine; they would much rather be left alone to challenge the humanoids in their own fashion.

It is true that some noble boars, in isolated instances, have elected to serve orcs or dwarves. The orcs value them as guard-beasts, while the dwarves find it agreeable to have steeds as gruff as themselves.

These rules can be used to represent any species of noble wild pig; from noble boar, to noble razorback, to noble warthog. There are no noble domestic pigs, but a union between a domestic pig and a noble wild pig could result in a noble half-breed.
