Noble Bat

Bats are mammals whose forelimbs form webbed wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. By contrast, other mammals said to fly, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums, and colugos, can only glide for short distances. Bats do not flap their entire forelimbs, as birds do, but instead flap their spread-out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane.

Species Descriptions

Sinister and quick, noble bats have never had a good reputation among humanoids or animals. Some think their very nature is the cause of this, and there is nothing one can do about it.

Careful and opportunistic, noble bats try to have a backup plan for every situation. They tend to see non-bats as obstacles or, at best, tools to see their plans executed.

The rare noble bat who tries to be a friendlier sort of creature will often over compensate, becoming obsequious and docile.

Being not well-liked by any of the other animals, noble bats tend to congregate in large numbers with each other, more or less ignoring other species. On rare occasions, one may form a bond of friendship with a member of another species, but they tend to be very selective, and will mistrust anyone who is not their chosen friend.

Noble Bat Species Traits

  • Abilities 1 Strength (Noble Bats always begin play with a Strength of 1, which can be increased through level advancement as usual), +4 Dexterity, -4 Constitution, +4 Wisdom, -2 Charisma; Noble Bats are exceedingly fast and perceptive creatures, but very weak and not very personable.
  • Size: Diminutive.
  • Base Speed: 5 feet, Fly: 40 ft. (good).
  • Natural Attack: Bite (1 hp) (The noble bat’s bite always does 1 hp, and is not modified by Strength).
  • Senses: Low-light vision (Ex); blindsense 20 ft. (Ex): Using its acute hearing, a noble bat notices things it cannot see. It usually does not need to make Perception checks to pinpoint the location of a creature within 20 feet, provided that it has line of effect to that creature. Any opponent the noble bat cannot see still has total concealment against it, and the noble bat still has the normal miss chance when attacking foes that have concealment. A noble bat is still denied its Dexterity bonus to Armor Class against attacks from creatures it cannot see.
  • Bonus Feat: Weapon Finesse.
  • Skills: +4 racial bonus to Perception checks. These bonuses are lost if the bat’s blindsense is negated.
  • Family: Mammal.
  • Noble Animal Type: Noble bats have the noble animal type except where superseded by other species traits and features.

Instead of receiving an additional skill rank or hit point whenever they gain a level in a Favored Class, noble bats have the option of choosing from a number of other bonuses, depending upon their Favored Classes.
