S-Class Oracle

What Are S-Class Characters?

S-class characters are a request from Kenneth Zike. They are built using the summoner class, as originally presented, as the basis against which all other classes are balanced.

The “S” in this case stands for both summoner and, as a more appropriate in-world reference, superior. If you have played—or GM’d for—a summoner and felt it was fine as is, you should have no problem running with an s-class character.

S-class oracles never asked for the power they wield; it was thrust upon them by their deity. Whether as a reward for their subservience or punishment for something they did to offend the gods, s-class oracles travel the world, ensuring others are made to understand that mortals owe everything to the divine beings above them.

Role: S-class oracles maintain their original role as healers and protectors, but that role is expanded with more access to spells through an additional domain and the ability to cast their domain spells using any oracle spell slot.

Note: The s-class oracle is an alternate, superior version of the standard oracle class. With one exception, they retain all of the standard oracle progressions and options, and as such should qualify to select oracle archetypes without specific adjustments. If an archetype alters or replaces the oracle’s regular selection of bloodline feats (at 7th, 13th, and 19th level), she still gains the additional feats gained as an s-class character, as well as one bloodline feat at 7th level, independent of the replacements.

Alignment: An s-class oracle’s alignment must be within one step of her deity’s, along either the law/chaos axis or the good/evil axis.

Hit Die: d8.

Starting Wealth: 3d6 × 10 gp (average 105 gp.) In addition, an s-class oracle begins play with an outfit worth 10 gp or less.

Class Skills

The s-class oracle’s class skills are Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (history) (Int), Knowledge (planes) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int).

In addition, s-class oracles receive additional class skills depending upon their oracle mystery.

Skill Ranks per Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the s-class oracle.

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies

S-class oracles are proficient with all simple weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields).

Some oracle revelations grant additional proficiencies.

Spellcasting

An s-class oracle casts divine spells drawn primarily from the cleric/oracle spell list. She can cast any spell she knows without preparing it ahead of time. To learn or cast a spell, an s-class oracle must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against an s-class oracle’s spell is: 10 + the spell level + the oracle’s Charisma modifier

Like other spellcasters, an s-class oracle can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: S-Class Oracle. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Charisma score.

An s-class oracle’s selection of spells is extremely limited. An s-class oracle begins play knowing four 0-level spells and two 1st-level spells of her choice.

At each new oracle level, she gains one or more new spells, as indicated on Table: Oracle Spells Known. (Unlike spells per day, the number of spells an s-class oracle knows is not affected by her Charisma score; the numbers on Table: Oracle Spells Known are fixed.) These new spells can be common spells chosen from the oracle/wizard spell list, or they can be unusual spells that the oracle has gained some understanding of through study.

Upon reaching 4th level, and at every even-numbered oracle level after that (6th, 8th, and so on), an s-class oracle can choose to learn a new spell in place of one she already knows. In effect, the oracle loses the old spell in exchange for the new one. The new spell’s level must be the same as that of the spell being exchanged.

An s-class oracle may swap only a single spell at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the spell at the same time that she gains new spells known for the level.

Unlike a wizard or a cleric an s-class oracle need not prepare her spells in advance. She can cast any spell she knows at any time, assuming she has not yet used up her spells per day for that spell level.

Orisons: S-class oracles learn a number of orisons, or 0-level spells, as noted on Table: S-Class Oracle Spells Known. These spells are cast like any other spell, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.

Mystery

S-class oracles draw upon a divine mystery to grant them spells and powers. This mystery also grants additional class skills and other special abilities. This mystery can represent a devotion to one ideal, prayers to deities that support the concept, or a natural calling to champion a cause. The mystery manifests in a number of ways as the oracle gains levels. An s-class oracle must pick one mystery upon taking her first level of oracle.

Once made, this choice cannot be changed.

At 2nd level, and every two levels thereafter, an s-class oracle learns an additional spell derived from her mystery.

These spells are in addition to the number of spells given on Table: Oracle Spells Known. They cannot be exchanged for different spells at higher levels.

The greed mystery is presented at the end of this section as a sample option. For additional mysteries, please refer to the source material.

Oracle’s Curse (Ex)

Every s-class oracle is cursed, but this curse comes with a benefit as well as a hindrance. This choice is made at 1st level, and once made, it cannot be changed. The oracle’s curse cannot be removed or dispelled without the aid of a deity. An s-class oracle’s curse is based on her oracle level plus one for every two levels or Hit Dice other than s-class oracle. Each oracle must choose one of the following curses.

The punished curse is presented at the end of this section as a sample option. For additional curses, please refer to the source material.

Revelations

At 1st level, and every odd level thereafter (3rd, 5th, and so on), an s-class oracle uncovers a new secret about her mystery that grants her powers and abilities. The oracle must select a revelation from the list of revelations available to her mystery. If a revelation is chosen at a later level, the oracle gains all of the abilities and bonuses granted by that revelation based on her current level. Unless otherwise noted, activating the power of a revelation is a standard action. Unless otherwise noted, the DC to save against these revelations is: 10 + 1/2 the oracle’s level + her Charisma modifier

Timeless Body (Ex)

At 17th level, an s-class oracle’s worth to her deity becomes immeasurable. She no longer takes ability score penalties for aging and cannot be magically aged. Any penalties she may have already incurred, however, remain in place. Bonuses still accrue, and the oracle still dies of old age when her time is up.

Final Revelation

At 20th level, an s-class oracle learns the final revelation about her mystery, granting her amazing powers and abilities. The nature of these bonuses depends upon the oracle’s mystery.
