Monster Scout

Monster ReeveMonster scouts are elite warriors with special training that allows them to fight alongside their monster in battle. A scout’s monsters are typically more physical in nature than those raised by other trainers, but they lack the ability to cast more powerful spells.

Scouts are divided into two camps; reeves and sentinels. Reeves are sanctioned by the king to protect his lands. Most reeves wear the heavy armor all scouts are proficient with, and many of them worship one or more of the gods of their world. Sentinels are more commonly seen as mercenaries or sell swords. They put their faith in nature and wear light or medium armor to make the most use of their Dexterity.

Hit Dice and Base Attack

d10. The scout’s base attack bonus is equal to her level.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

The scout is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor and with shields (except tower shields). She suffers no arcane spell failure for casting spells while wearing armor or using a shield.

Spells per Day

The scout’s spells per day are more limited than other trainers. Refer to the table presented here when determining the scout’s spells per day. Scouts also do not receive a monster’s cantrips like other trainers do.

Monster Companion

The scout gains Monster Companion as a bonus feat at 1st level.

Detection (Su)

As a standard action, a scout can detect monsters. This ability functions as detect animals or plants, but with any creature that shares a type with a monster she has captured.

Monster SentinelFaction

Each monster scout must choose to be either a reeve or a sentinel. This choice can’t be changed later.

Reeve (Su): At 2nd level, and every 3 levels thereafter, a reeve gains the smite monster trainer perk. If she chooses the improved favored enemy perk, the reeve treats monsters of the chosen type the same as a paladin would treat an undead.

Sentinel (Ex): At 1st level, a sentinel gains favored enemy, as the ranger feature. She gains additional favored enemies at 5th level and every 5 levels thereafter. If she chooses the improved favored enemy perk, the sentinel gains a favored terrain of her choice instead.

This ability replaces the trainer’s normal favored enemy and modifies the improved favored enemy perk.

Trainer Perks

A monster scout can’t choose smite monster as a trainer perk.

The following trainer perks complement the scout archetype: Animal companion, armored companion, natural armor, run with me, side-by-side, tough companion, and warrior companion.
