Focus Powers

General Focus Powers

A creature or character with the barrier focus class feature gains the benefits of focus powers only while focused, and some of these powers require taking an action first. Unless otherwise noted, an individual focus power cannot be selected more than once.

Stance Focus Powers

Some of the following focus powers are stances. Activating a stance focus power is a move action. A barrier sentinel can activate a stance focus power as part of using barrier focus, but can’t have more than one stance focus power active at a time. If she activates a stance focus power while another one is active, the current stance immediately ends. The stance can be intentionally ended at the beginning of the sentinel’s turn as a free action; otherwise, it lasts until she breaks focus.

Table: Focus Powers
Focus Power Prerequisites Benefits Source
3rd Party Publishers
Accurate Stance (Ex)   The sentinel can focus her strikes. She gains a +1 competence bonus on melee attack rolls and thrown weapon attack rolls. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels the sentinel has. This is a stance focus power. SSD: LoT
Animal Fury (Ex)   Gain a bite attack. See text. SSD: LoT
Barbarian Rage Power   Gain a rage power from the available list. See text. SSD: LoT
Bonus Combat Feat   Gain a combat feat from the available list. See text. SSD: LoT
Bodyguard (Ex)   The sentinel gains Bodyguard as a bonus feat. The bonus granted to her ally’s AC increases by 1 for every 4 levels the sentinel has. SSD: LoT
Clarity of Will (Ex) 4th-level The sentinel can roll twice for any miss chances or Will saving throws to disbelieve illusions, taking the better result. SSD: LoT
Clear Mind (Ex) 8th-level When the sentinel fails a Will saving throw, she can attempt another Will saving throw at the end of her next turn (using the original DC). If the second saving throw is successful, the sentinel is treated as if she succeeded at the first saving throw, negating or reducing the effect as determined by the spell or effect. If this second saving throw fails, the sentinel suffers the full effects of the spell or effect as normal. A barrier sentinel must be at least 8th level to select this focus power. SSD: LoT
Cunning Intuition (Ex)   When the sentinel readies an action, she does not need to declare what action she will take, only the trigger for that action and an action type (either standard, move, swift, or free). If she chooses the standard action type, the sentinel can take a move action instead when her readied action triggers.
When the condition triggers, the sentinel can choose a specific action of the appropriate type to take. A barrier sentinel must be at least 10th level to select this focus power.
SSD: LoT
Danger Sense (Ex) 6th-level The sentinel gains a +2 bonus on Reflex saves to avoid traps and a +2 dodge bonus to AC against attacks by traps. These bonuses increase by 1 for every 3 levels obtained beyond 6th (to a maximum of +6 at 18th level). SSD: LoT
Deadly Accuracy (Ex) Accurate stance, 4th-level If the sentinel scores a critical threat while in the accurate stance, she applies double the accurate stance’s bonus when rolling to confirm the critical. If she confirms the critical hit, she ignores her focus penalty to damage for that attack. SSD: LoT
Disarming Stance (Ex)   The sentinel can focus on disarming her foes. Once per round, she can attempt a disarm combat maneuver against one target in place of a melee attack. If she succeeds, the target is disarmed. This disarm attempt doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. SSD: LoT
Energy Resistance (Ex)   The sentinel gains resistance to one energy type (See Text). SSD: LoT
Fearless Focus (Ex) 12th-level The sentinel is immune to the shaken and frightened conditions (but not the panicked condition). SSD: LoT
Flesh Wound (Ex) 10th-level Once per day, the sentinel can avoid serious harm from an attack. She attempts a Fortitude save with a DC equal to the damage that would be dealt by the attack. If she succeeds, she takes no damage from the attack. If she fails, she takes half damage from the attack and the damage is nonlethal. The sentinel must elect to use this ability after the attack roll is made, but before the damage is rolled. SSD: LoT
Increased Damage Reduction (Ex) 8th-level The sentinel’s damage reduction increases by 2/— whenever she is focused. A barrier sentinel can select this focus power up to three times. Its effects stack. SSD: LoT
Inspire Accuracy (Ex) Accurate stance While in the accurate stance, the sentinel imparts the stance’s bonus and penalty to all willing allies within 30 feet of her. SSD: LoT
Internal Fortitude (Ex) 8th-level The sentinel is immune to the sickened and nauseated conditions. SSD: LoT
Intimidating Stare (Ex)   The sentinel gains Intimidating Prowess as a bonus feat while focused (she adds both her Strength and Charisma on Intimidate checks). She can attempt an Intimidate check to demoralize an adjacent foe as a move action instead of a standard action. If the sentinel successfully demoralizes an adjacent foe, that foe is shaken when attacking a creature other than the sentinel while the sentinel remains focused. SSD: LoT
Knockdown Stance (Ex)   The sentinel can focus on toppling her foes. Once per round, she can make a trip attack against one target in place of a melee attack. If she succeeds, the target is knocked prone. This trip attempt doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. SSD: LoT
Lethal Accuracy (Ex) accurate stance, deadly accuracy, 16th-level While in the accurate stance, the sentinel’s critical multiplier for damage increases by 1 (a ×2 multiplier becomes ×3, a ×3 multiplier becomes ×4, and a ×4 multiplier becomes ×5). SSD: LoT
Mighty Accuracy (Ex) accurate stance, deadly accuracy, 12th-level While in the accurate stance, the sentinel automatically confirms a critical hit. This power is used as an immediate action once a critical threat has been determined. This ability can be used only once per day. SSD: LoT
Mobile Fortress (Ex)   While using a tower shield, the sentinel adds half of the shield’s bonus to AC (including its enhancement bonus) to her touch AC and takes only a –1 penalty on attack rolls because of the shield’s encumbrance. Whenever she would use a tower shield to gain total cover, the sentinel also grants total cover against attacks passing through the selected edge of her space to any adjacent ally on her side of that edge. SSD: LoT
Mobile Stronghold (Ex) Mobile fortress, 6th-level While using mobile fortress, the sentinel does not suffer a penalty on attack rolls because of the shield’s encumbrance. Whenever the sentinel uses her tower shield to gain total cover, she gains partial cover against spells passing through the selected edge of her space, and grants that same cover to allies benefiting from her mobile fortress. The sentinel can also gain total cover against a single attack made against her as an immediate or swift action. A barrier sentinel must have the mobile fortress focus power or feat and be at least 6th level to select this focus power. SSD: LoT
No Escape (Ex)   The sentinel can move up to double her base speed as an immediate action. She can use this ability only when an adjacent foe uses a withdraw action to move away from her. She must end her movement adjacent to the enemy that used the withdraw action. The sentinel provokes attacks of opportunity as normal during this movement. SSD: LoT
Powerful Stance (Ex)   The sentinel can overcome her damage penalties with focus and training. She gains a +1 bonus on melee damage rolls and thrown weapon damage rolls. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels the sentinel has. SSD: LoT
Protect Vitals (Ex) 8th-level The sentinel gains a +4 dodge bonus to AC against attack rolls made to confirm critical hits. SSD: LoT
Renewed Vigor (Ex) 4th-level As a move action, the sentinel heals 1d8 points of damage + her barrier sentinel level + her Constitution modifier. For every 4 levels the sentinel has beyond 4th, the amount healed increases by 1d8 (to a maximum of 5d8 at 20th level). This ability can be used only once per day. SSD: LoT
Renewed Vitality (Ex)   The sentinel ignores the effect of 1 point of ability penalty or ability damage per 2 levels she has (maximum 10). At 6th level, the sentinel can also ignore 1 negative level per 4 levels she has. She takes the full effects of the ability penalties, ability damage, or negative levels once she breaks her focus. SSD: LoT
Sense of Duty (Ex)   The sentinel can use barrier focus even when fatigued. If the sentinel focuses while fatigued, she loses the fatigued condition and she does not gain temporary hit points from barrier focus. Once she breaks her focus, the sentinel is exhausted for 10 minutes. SSD: LoT
Sharpened Accuracy (Ex) Accurate stance, 8th-level While in the accurate stance, the sentinel ignores the miss chance for concealment and treats total concealment as concealment. She also ignores cover penalties except those from total cover. SSD: LoT
Strength Stance (Ex)   The sentinel can summon mighty strength. She gains a +1 competence bonus on combat maneuver checks and to her CMD. These bonuses increase by 1 for every 4 levels the sentinel has. In addition, she gains a +8 competence bonus on Strength checks to lift, push, bend, or break objects (this does not apply to combat maneuvers). SSD: LoT
Superstition (Ex)   The sentinel gains a +2 competence bonus on saving throws made to resist spells and spell-like abilities. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels the sentinel has. The sentinel cannot be the willing target of any spell and must attempt saving throws to resist all spells, even those cast by allies. SSD: LoT
Swift Foot (Ex)   The sentinel gains a 10-foot enhancement bonus to her base speed. A barrier sentinel can select this focus power up to three times; its effects stack. SSD: LoT
Taunting Stance (Ex) 12th-level The sentinel can leave herself open to attacks while preparing devastating counterattacks. Enemies gain a +4 bonus on attack and damage rolls against the sentinel while she’s in this stance, but every attack against the sentinel or one of her allies provokes an attack of opportunity from the sentinel, which is resolved prior to each provoking attack. Enemies recognize this stance as soon as the sentinel is adjacent to them while using it. SSD: LoT
Unexpected Strike (Ex) 8th-level The sentinel can make an attack of opportunity against a foe that moves into any square threatened by the sentinel, regardless of whether that movement would normally provoke an attack of opportunity. The sentinel can use this ability only when there are no other foes in a square threatened by the sentinel. SSD: LoT
Uncanny Dodge (Ex)   The sentinel gains uncanny dodge, as the barbarian feature. SSD: LoT
Uncanny Dodge, Improved (Ex)   The sentinel gains improved uncanny dodge, as the barbarian feature SSD: LoT
