Winter Witch (Legendary Witch Archetype)

While witches can master magics of all seasons, there is a strange affinity for the bitter chill and haunting isolation of winter that attracts practitioners of witchcraft to its brumal embrace.

Winter Witchcraft: The winter witch may not select the seasons patron or any patron that focuses on heat or fire. The winter witch may never select a familiar that hails from a hot climate or one with the fire subtype.

They add the following spells to their spells known in lieu of the spells provided by their patron. If their patron reduces the spell levels or uses alchemy, only add up to the highest spell level, the legendary witch is able to cast or ignore this ability.

3rd: wall of ice, 5th: icy prison, 7th: freezing sphere, 8th: polar ray

Additionally, you may learn the spell ray of frost as a cantrip.

This ability modifies the legendary witch’s patron but does not preclude the legendary witch from taking an archetype that modifies or replaces the patron.

Ice Magic (Ex)

At 1st level, when a winter witch casts a spell with the cold descriptor, the save DC increases by 1.

However, they are unable to learn, prepare or use spells or abilities that deal fire damage or have the fire descriptor.

Inured to the Cold (Ex)

At 1st level, a winter witch is so exposed to cold climates that they is hardened against it at the cost of being unused to hot environments.

They need not make Fortitude saves to withstand cold temperatures or high altitudes, however whenever they must make a Fortitude save against hot temperatures, they always rolls twice and takes the lower result. At 4th level, they gain cold resistance 5 but take 1 additional fire damage when dealt fire damage. At 9th level, this increases to cold resistance 10 and 3 additional fire damage and at 14th level this becomes cold immunity and fire vulnerability.

Uttercold (Ex)

At 6th level, whenever the winter witch deals cold damage, treat the target’s cold resistance as half of normal.

At 12th level, when the winter witch deals cold damage, half of the cold damage is pulled from an otherworldly place and is not subject to cold resistance or immunity. This ability replaces the witch’s hexes gained at 6th and 12th levels.

A winter witch can select the following hexes:

Blizzardsight (Ex)

A winter witch can see normally in natural or magical rain, sleet, hail, fog, snowstorms, blizzards, and similar weather conditions. If the effect is created by magic, the witch can see up to 15 feet without penalty, with normal penalties and effects applying beyond that distance. This does not allow the witch to see anything they could not see otherwise, such as an invisible creature.

Freeze and Thaw (Sp)

As a standard action, a legendary witch can melt an adjacent 5-foot cube of ice or a 10-foot cube of snow. Melting snow produces a volume of water equal to 10% the snow’s volume. Alternatively, a winter witch can freeze 5 cubic feet of water into solid ice. This freezing takes place gradually over 1 round, making it almost impossible to trap a creature unless it’s helpless. This cannot affect water within a creature. One cubic foot of ice contains roughly 8 gallons of water and weighs about 60 pounds.

This ability works on fresh water and saltwater but has no affect on water creatures; on liquids (frozen or otherwise) other than water; or on magical water, ice, or snow. A witch can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 1/2 their class level.

Frostfoot (Su)

This ability works like the spider climb spell, but the surfaces the witch climbs must be icy.

The witch can move across icy surfaces without penalty and does not need to make Acrobatics checks to run or charge on ice. They can move across regular snow without penalty, and heavy snow only costs them 2 squares of movement instead of 4.

Frozen Caress (Su)

Whenever the winter witch casts a touch spell, they can infuse the magic with cold as a swift action. This grants the spell the cold descriptor and adds 1d4 points of cold damage to the spell’s effect.

If the touch spell allows a saving throw, a successful save negates this additional cold damage.
