Dreadful Aura (Su) A black-eyed brownie radiates a 30-foot emanation of pure dread. Whenever a living creature with an Intelligence score of 3 or higher begins its turn within this aura, that creature becomes shaken for as long as it remains within the aura unless it succeeds on a DC 13 Will save to negate the effect. If the creature is already shaken, it becomes frightened instead; if it already frightened it becomes panicked instead. A creature that succeeds on a saving throw against a black-eyed brownie’s dreadful aura cannot be further affected by that brownie’s dreadful aura for 24 hours. Dreadful aura is a fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Sinister Mien (Su) A black-eyed brownie counts as an evil outsider for the purpose of detect evil spells and similar effects which reveal the presence of evil. In addition, the DC of any Knowledge or Sense Motive check against a black-eyed brownie is increased by +20. Whenever a creature fails a Sense Motive check against a black-eyed brownie, that creature gets the impression that the blacked-eyed brownie is dishonest, hostile, and actively attempting to appear less dangerous than it actually is (even if none of this isn’t true).

A benevolent race of child-like fey, the black-eyed brownies were long ago cursed by a malevolent deity. Although they mean no harm to others, black-eyed brownies are tainted with dark energies that disturb others and obscure the brownies’ good intentions.

Black-eyed brownies reside in the wilderness amongst their own kind. Families in their rural society tend to be isolated from one another, though encounters between different families groups are dominated by the free exchange of favors. The etiquette of their society demands that blacked-eyed brownies exchange requests for favors and offers of assistance from one another as a form of polite introduction.

Because black-eyed brownies rarely encounter outsiders, few of them understand that their mere presence disturbs and antagonizes other sentient beings. A black-eyed brownie encountering humanoids for the first time will often assume that these humanoids expect the brownie to either offer or request assistance. When these efforts are rebuffed, the brownie is often confused and offended. It may get the impression that it has failed to properly communicate its intentions, and reiterate itself in a more forceful manner.
