Ornamancer

The study of ornamancy explores magical secrets through manipulation of gemstones. In their explorations, these ornamancers — known as “bejeweled ones” — postulated that gemstones were manifestations of an innate magic that transformed ordinary stone.

Role: Using jewels and precious gemstones as arcane foci, ornamancers tap into the innate magical properties of the crystalline matrix of minerals to produce wondrous effects. Their creations are instantly recognizable and renowned in even distant lands for their elegance and power.

Alignment: Ornamancers can be of any alignment but are most often lawful.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the ornamancer prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

Ornamancers gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Spells per Day

When a new ornamancer level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class she belonged to before adding the prestige class. She does not, however, gain other benefits a character of that class would have gained, except for additional spells per day, spells known (if she is a spontaneous spellcaster), and an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming an ornamancer, she must decide to which class she adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Imbue Jewel (Su)

At 1st level, the ornamancer can enhance a gem so that it grants her a continuous benefit. While imbued, the gem may grant the ornamancer any one of the following benefits as long as it remains on her person:

The ornamancer may have only one imbued jewel at a time.

She may imbue a new jewel with one hour of uninterrupted concentration. Jewels used for this purpose must have a value of at least 500 gp.

Jewel Crafting (Ex)

When creating any magic item, the ornamancer may include one gem in its construction, thereby reducing the cost to create the magic item by an amount equal to twice the value of the precious stone. For example, if an ornamancer used a garnet worth 100 gp in the construction of a ring of protection +2 (normally costing 4,000 gp to create), her cost to create the ring would be only 3,800 gp.

This ability can never reduce the cost of creating a magic item to less than one half of its usual base cost.

Bonus Feats

At 2nd and 4th levels, the ornamancer gains a bonus item creation feat of her choice.

Crystallize Arcana (Su)

At 3rd level, the ornamancer may attempt to recapture the energy spent in casting a spell, distilling it into a gemstone for later use. To do so, the ornamancer uses a gemstone worth at least 100 gp per spell level she is attempting to capture. As a free action after casting an arcane spell at least one level lower than the highest she can cast, the ornamancer attempts to capture the spell in the gem, which must be held in her hand.

If the ornamancer succeeds on a Spellcraft skill check (DC 15 + the spell’s level), she creates a copy of her spell inside the gem. She can then cast this spell from the gem, requiring all of the usual actions, material components, and parameters. Only she can use the gemstone, though another creature can hold it for her without risk of losing its potency.

Anyone holding such a gem who succeeds on a Spellcraft skill check (DC 10 + the ornamancer’s casting attribute + the spell level) can identify the spell contained in the gemstone.

At 5th level, the ornamancer can store up to two spells at a time in the same gem using crystallize arcana. She can also now give a gem to another creature, who can discern and cast the stored spells from the gem as if it were a ring of spell storing.

All spells stored this way fade when the ornamancer next regains spells.
