Editor’s Note

It is important to remember that applying templates is not necessarily a 100% perfect science. However, if you wish to use a more “technically” correct monster, please note the following observations we’ve made. If you disagree with any of these corrections please let us know!

1 Incorrect HD, CR, and XP Value: A standard hill giant has 10 HD and is CR 7. The zombie template adds additional HD based on the zombies size and size Large adds +2 HD, meaning the “correct” HD should be 12 not 13. At 12 HD, the CR would actually drop by 1, from 6 to 5, also reducing the creatures XP value from 2,400 to 1,600 and its hp from 71 to 66 (12d8+12 instead of 13d8+13.)

2 Incorrect Speed: A standard hill giant has speed 40. The zombie template does not change a base creatures speed. However, the hill giant zombie shown here has speed 30 ft., not 40 ft.. We believe this is an error left over from the previous hill giant zombie used in Rise of the Runelords that had speed 30 ft. because it was wearing armor. Therefore, we believe the hill giant zombie shown here should actually have speed 40 ft. not 30 ft. since it is not wearing armor.

3 Incorrect Damage Modifier: Strength 27 grants a +8 damage bonus. As the zombie hill giant has only one natural attack, it adds 1 1/2 times its Strength modifier to its damage rolls, for a total damage modifier of +12, not +13. We believe the +13 is another “left-over” from the previous version of the zombie hill giant which had a higher Strength score.
